Screen vs. print document design

There are some of the major topics for a better understanding of the difference between the web document designs and print document designs which are the layout, colour and audiences (Miller, 2011).

Miller (2011) explains the importance of layout in both the designs as the main target is to use elements of design such as shapes, lines and more, effectively. However the difference occurs when it comes to space where the print documents measure by inches and web documents by pixels. Moreover while the print design layout is definite of its ability of usage of space the screen layout should be designed in a way that it will look great on every size of monitors.

For colours of both the web and printed documents designs, Miller (2011) expresses that it is essential recognize the colour models and spaces which are RGB, CMYK and HSV. In print designs, it is helpful to know the difference in colours on screen and on paper while web designs should consider colours from monitor to monitor.

Lastly, in order to grab the audiences’ attention on the sales products such as newspapers or magazines, the print document design should be as catchy as possible with the limited space to entice the consumers with the limited space, for instance the cover of a magazine. Hence taking the advantage of physical approaches in texture and shape would help to create the successful effectiveness of design. On the other hand, it is significant for the site to keep the audience as long as possible using web designs. Some of the useful tools to attract the audience would be direct links to the site, visual images and animations, sounds, catchy titles and interactivity.

New forms of media publishing

The new form of media communication, such as the internet, has been rapidly replacing the traditional forms of media like TV, newspapers and radios, with its ability of prompt publications and sharing of information. Moreover a lot of people find it more favourable because, unlike the new form of media, the traditional form is a one-way communication.

In fact, Jay Rosen, the journalism professor of New York University, supports this by explaining that the printed newspapers being altered into digital media, has helped the costs of getting information cheaper, thus increasing the participants with more ideas. Furthermore, regardless of the location, media consumers can now easily get the information using new social media tools on internet (Ingram, 2011).

An example of the social media tools is Twitter. Steven Levy of Wired magazine explains how twitter has been impacting greatly on the publishing media with the fact of how user-oriented and real time it can be, and Levy also expressed that social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter are becoming more important to the community (Harper, 2009).

The affordance theory is claimed by Gibson (Learning-Theories, 2011) that the world not only being recognized by the shapes of objects and relationships, but the perception making the action.

This theory has hence proved the significance of social media tools such as Twitter where anyone can share the information online anywhere at any time, altering communication in a new media ecosystem.

The article ‘Blogs and Community’ of Nancy White, a well-known specialist, was re-posted in Robertson’s blog, The Knowledge Tree. White (2006) has explained three main types of communities: single blog centric, topic centric and boundaried communities.

One blog centric community

The blog is owned by one owner or an organization, allowing the readers and commentors of the blog to identify the author and inter-communicate with one another. However the readers and commentors of this blogging community are not able to change the subject matter of the blog.

Topic Centric Community

This community is established due to the rise of the same passion, interests or subject matter among the followers of the blog. Furthermore, the identity of centric community blog does not rely upon one blog but dispersed to the community allowing them to have more different perspectives unlike the one blog centric communities.

Boundaried Community

This community is organized in a form of collection of blogs operates in one platform which generally works in a registry format as a boundary. Although the identity of centric communication is owned by the owner of the site, the power is seized by the postings of the bloggers and recognition of the site among the social networks. An example of this community would be MySpace where a log-in process is to be made for joining the community which allows interconnection among the bloggers by linking with one another.

Classification of blogs & opinion about the most appropriate classification approach

source: http://www.smartonlinestrategy.com/blog.html

There are uncountable amount of blogs in the world today, all of which are classified into variety types of blogs in both the content wise and the styles used to present those contents.

source: http://blog.naver.com/skygood5?Redirect=Log&logNo=140132777609&topReferer=http://cafeblog.search.naver.com&imgsrc=20110627_66/skygood5_1309150140950za2TF_JPEG/4.jpg

Simons (2008) demonstrated the classification of different types of blogs to categories of pamphleteering, digest, advocacy, popular mechanics, exhibition, gatewatcher, diary, advertisement and the news blogs. Moreover Simons (2008) then came up with the analysis and furthermore explanations of each category. This type of classifying many different types of blogs was reasonably well-organized and easily understandable due to the examples supporting the clarification of each blog type.

On the other hand, Madhavan (2008) indicates the categorization in presentation slides into 12 types of blogs such as sanity, identity, vanity, humanity, and professional blogs and so on.

source: http://blog.naver.com/skygood5?Redirect=Log&logNo=140132777609&topReferer=http://cafeblog.search.naver.com&imgsrc=20110627_66/skygood5_1309150140950za2TF_JPEG/4.jpg

However, despite of the more attractive form of classification system Madhavan presented using the visual communication, images, and simpler textual contents, Simon’s taxonomy seemed more informative. Although Simon’s explanation of each type of blogs might look uninteresting, it is more precisely comprehensible.

In addition, blog types can be segregated according to the subject matters, as personal, political, sports blogs and more (Newsbyblog.com, 2011), and to the media types such as vlog, linklog, sketchlog, photolog and so on (Mkartina, 2011).
